Yes, you can upgrade the Windows 7 to windows 8 or windows 8.1 without installation media. You can use Windows 8.1 Upgrade Assistant to analyses the compatibility and prerequisite check.
Upon the prerequisite check you will get the purchase option. At the purchase screen you can choose one of below options. (See Attached Screenshot for options)
- Upgrade Now – To online upgrade windows
- Get the upgrade on DVD – To get installation DVD to your physical address.
We would suggest you to take the Image backup of your System before upgrade, also note that upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8 or 8.1 will not preserve you programs and settings. You may need to install them again.
